    I recently purchased Lightroom for photo editing. Since downloading the app, my Laptop has slowed down considerably, and I often have to hit the power button to switch it off because the whole system stopped responding. This is extremely frustrating. Instead of buying a new laptop, what are some settings I can change, or software/hardware I can upgrade too to solve this issue?

      I have an HP core i3 , 8th gen. 8GB RAM. I got it a year ago so its still pretty new.

    Have a look at how often LR backs up your files maybe set it to weekly. The backup files also build up and eventually take up space and slow the laptop down, the older backup files can be deleted keeping the most recent

    Cinelle, is this only when LR is open, or all the time after installation?

      The laptop is fine if i dont try and open/ work in Lr. Different story once Ive opened it and even after closing it, the laptop then slows down or doesn’t respond.

    Hi Cinelle, many things can slow it down.

    How many photos in your catalog?
    In Catalog Settings > File Handling: What size is Standard Preview Size and Preview Quality set to?
    In Catalog Settings > Metadata: is Automatically write changes to XMP checked?
    Are your original photos on your local drive or an external USB drive?

    Windows / macOS ?

    Hi Cinelle,

    LR uses a fairly big scratch area – so if your disk is nearly full, it will throttle itself.

    Number of images in cataloque normally is not a problem, but cataloque setting needs to be correct, otherwise LR would constantly faf around in the background.
